Case Study: How paraplanners at Manse Capital use Timeline for their retirement clients
Manse Capital is an independent, fee-based financial planning business with over 20 years’ experience. They help simplify the complex to bring greater financial security and certainty to the lives of individuals across the UK and use cashflow modelling to help. Since 2004, Manse Capital has also been running passive model portfolios for their clients.
We recently caught up with Manse Capital’s, Technical Manager, Imelda de Bruin. At Manse Capital they use Timeline, our next-generation retirement income software, to build models ready for the planners to take to a meeting.
Imelda explains how the paraplanners at Manse Capital use Timeline for their retirement clients:
“We run a range of passive model portfolios; the asset allocation for each of the portfolios is stored on Timeline at template level. We also have a range of template clients for each of the risk profiles (cautious, balanced, prudent and growth) where the template holds a cash account, GIA, ISA, drawdown pension, and UFPLS pension all attached to their risk profiles. You just change the values on the accounts, delete accounts they don’t have and add any that are missing. The templates are set up with the standard withdrawal assumptions, cash, GIA, ISA, pension and standard fees. Fees are 1.6% - that’s -1% for our advice, 0.3% for the platform and 0.3% TER of the model portfolio. In practice these will vary, but we don’t go to the length of personalising each one. Generally, the differences in fees are nominal, but we know to change them when required.
It’s a lot quicker than modelling with Xtools - which is what we used to use for all. Now, we just use it for clients in accumulation, or for clients in retirement with complex needs like IHT planning.
We incorporate the Timeline output with our planning report so we can go into detail about the income and expenditure assumptions we’ve used to build the model. Timeline also runs scenarios based on historical returns, so we’re not inputting the returns, just the asset allocations. The model implies that there is only one outcome which follows a smooth journey.”
Manse capital first heard of Timeline after attending various conferences. The software has helped paraplanners to produce much quicker, more tangible and understandable models than linear cashflows.
